A slow Windows PC is frustrating — but most performance issues can be fixed for free in under 30 minutes. Here is exactly what to do in 2026.
1. Disable Startup Programs
Too many programs launching at startup is the most common cause of a slow PC.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
- Click the Startup apps tab
- Right-click any app you do not need at startup and select Disable
2. Free Up Storage Space
Windows slows down significantly when your drive is more than 85% full.
- Press Windows + S and search for Disk Cleanup
- Select your C: drive and click OK
- Check all boxes and click Clean up system files
3. Run Windows Updates
Outdated Windows can cause performance issues and security vulnerabilities.
- Go to Settings → Windows Update
- Click Check for updates
- Install all available updates and restart
4. Scan for Malware
Malware running in the background can silently drain your PC resources.
- Go to Settings → Privacy and Security → Windows Security
- Click Virus and threat protection
- Run a Quick scan
5. Change Power Settings
- Search for Power plan in the Start menu
- Select High performance or Balanced
- Avoid Power saver mode which throttles your CPU
6. Restart Regularly
Many people leave their PC on for days or weeks. A simple restart clears temporary files, resets RAM, and applies updates. Restart at least once a week for best performance.
