If your iPhone screen is frozen, cracked, or completely unresponsive, you can still turn it off or force restart it using button combinations. Here is how for every iPhone model in 2026.
iPhone 8, X, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and Later
Force restart:
- Quickly press and release the Volume Up button
- Quickly press and release the Volume Down button
- Press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears
Turn off without screen: Press and hold the Side button + Volume Down simultaneously for 5 seconds until the phone powers off.
iPhone 7 and 7 Plus
Force restart: Press and hold both the Side button and Volume Down button at the same time until the Apple logo appears.
iPhone 6s and Earlier
Force restart: Press and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button at the same time until the Apple logo appears.
Using Siri
If your screen responds to touch but the display is damaged, activate Siri and say "Hey Siri, turn off my iPhone". Confirm when prompted.
Using AssistiveTouch
If AssistiveTouch is enabled, the on-screen button can be used to access shutdown options without pressing physical buttons. Go to Settings → Accessibility → Touch → AssistiveTouch to enable it before you need it.
